If you’re a business owner or a potential business owner who is looking to establish an online presence there are a few things that you need to understand about websites and
web design before diving in head first. The first thing they need to understand is that a
website is more than just html splattered on a page.
Web Design is visual art and a blend of various elements that work together to communicate a message to the audience. Now, I’m not trying to complicate
web design or make it seem impossible for someone to do, but I would like to emphasize the fact that
NOT EVERYONE WHO CLAIMS TO KNOW HOW TO CREATE A WEBSITE IS CAPABLE. Previously, I wrote an article about
the
importance of hiring a
professional to design you
website
and I would like to continue to ring the alarm against this business blunder. I have seen too many cases where
a business owner will try to cut corners and hire a non-professional to design their
website. In most cases, they either get
a horrific website or they don’t
get anything at all. Therefore,
the first thing that a business
owner needs to understand is
that they need to hire a
professional to design their
website.

Secondly, your website needs to be aesthetically pleasing. You’ve often heard the cliché, “Looks aren’t everything, but it’s what’s on the inside that counts.” While this may be true when it comes to judging human beings, it’s utterly incomplete when it comes to
web design. The
design of a website will be the first thing that a visitor sees
upon visiting your page. Therefore, it’s very important to aesthetically engage them as soon as possible. So if I had to sum up the importance of aesthetic appeal in a cliché, it would be, “First impressions count” and the beauty of the design will be the first thing a user sees when visiting your website so make sure that your
website is aesthetically-pleasing.

Next, your website needs to be usable. Usability can be looked at from two different aspects, design and content. Design usability deals with the fact that a
website needs to be designed in such a way that it’s easy for the user to navigate and find what they need. Content usability touches on the idea that your
website needs
to offer relevant content to
your audience. Your web designer should be savvy enough to help you implement your ideas on the web and help you brainstorm on ways to better serve your audience.
|
|
Last, your website needs to be functional. All
websites integrate functionality to a different level. Some include a high-level of functionality while others only utilize technology to a small extent, but to whatever
category you fall into
ensure that your website actually works the way it should and your audience understands how to use it.
|
|
To sum everything up, your
website needs to be a combination of the aforementioned attributes:
aesthetic appeal, usability, and functionality. None of these attributes should overshadow the other, rather they should all work together to deliver a balanced
website. It defeats the purpose to have a
website that’s highly visually appealing, but lacks usable content and functionality. Likewise, having a
website that’s highly functional, but lacks curb appeal and usability is
a greater folly.
